Let’s begin with the specifications of the T-shirt design theme, also known as sublimation design or POD (Print on Demand) design. While any clipart image can technically be used for T-shirt designs, there are specific niche requirements:

  • Vector designs with solid colors
  • Certain aesthetics and a limited variety of trendy art styles
  • Typography integrated into many designs

T-shirt Design Prompt Builder overview

This Builder is divided into four blocks: Design, Text, Style, and Parameters. Note that the Text block and some dropdown lists are exclusive to the PRO version. As always, select your desired options from the dropdown lists and add any custom text to the empty fields. This Prompt Builder is devoted to T-shirt design, that’s why we have “tshirt design” digital product and “white” background as default values.

Main issues regarding compatibility of prompts from our Prompt Builders for other text-to-image AI generators are mentioned in FAQ. While our focus in this guide is on Midjourney, we've also tested the prompts with other text-to-image AI generators like Flux, DALL-E, Ideogram, and Leonardo. Here are some key points:

  • Flux.1 is a new tool delivering stunning results, particularly for T-shirt designs. Our prompts work well with it, though its style options are more limited than Midjourney's.
  • DALL-E excels at producing vector designs, making it highly suitable for POD.
  • Ideogram outperforms other tools for typography designs.
  • Leonardo is a solid free option, though it may require some practice to achieve good results.
  • Styles may not always work consistently, but themes can be used instead to make your image more cartoonish or vintage.
  • In some cases it’s recommended to avoid using t-shirt design digital products, as they might produce images already placed on t-shirts, which is not what we're looking for. Instead, use terms like clipart or logo without mentioning the t-shirt.

Recommendations on using text

Yes, you can add text to your designs, especially since Midjourney introduced a text feature starting from version 6. However, there are some limitations:

  • Customization issues: The text is treated as an image, so it can't be edited.
  • Inconsistency: Outcomes can be unreliable, and errors may occur.
  • Font control: There’s little control over fonts, and the results may not be visually pleasing.
  • Reusing designs with different text: This can be challenging as styles may not remain consistent.

A partial solution in Midjourney is to use the Vary Region function to correct mistakes, change text, or alter the font. As the text feature continues to evolve, we can expect better results in future versions.

To sum up, if you want quick results, you can include text in your initial prompt. However, we recommend creating text-free designs and adding text later in tools like Canva or Kittl. This approach gives you full control over the text, font, and color, which is crucial for POD designs where personalization is often required.

Prompt ideas to start with

If you're new to the Prompt Builder or need inspiration, the Preset dropdown list is a great starting point. This feature is available only in the PRO version. If you don't have access to it, you can copy prompts from the Visual Examples sheet. Below you can see the screenshots of the builder setups and Midjourney outcome images. These examples showcase various use cases, helping you achieve great results with minimal effort. Enjoy!
