A t-shirt design is more than a nice picture. Clipart can get by on visuals alone. A t-shirt design has to speak to a clear group of people, say something they'd love to wear, and carry artwork that backs up the message. A cute panda on its own won't do it.

That is exactly why this comparison gave us a hard time. Not every AI tool can handle t-shirt designs, and some miss by a wide margin. As always, we share our experience openly, flaws included, so you know what to expect from each tool before you spend your time on it.

AI tools tested for t-shirt design

Here are the eight generators we tested, in our order of preference:

Below, each tool gets our notes on how it handled the job, plus a gallery of its results. Where a tool struggled, we show those designs too, so you can judge the problems with your own eyes.

How we judged

1. A real t-shirt design. Not just clipart, but a design you could actually print on a shirt. This was the first thing we looked for.

2. Spelling. The text has to be correct, every letter of it. A typo on a printed shirt can't be fixed late.

3. Fonts. Correct spelling alone is not enough. Boring fonts, or text that looks torn away from the artwork, don't make a good design. We wanted lettering with character, built into the artwork as one piece.

4. Contrast. The artwork and the text have to be clearly visible. Sometimes AI puts letters on a background of a similar color, and the design gets lost. On a t-shirt, that is not acceptable.

These scores reflect what we like to see on a shirt. Your eye may land somewhere else, so browse the galleries and make your own call. The ranking runs from our favorite down. See it as our recommendation, and feel free to reshuffle it to your own taste.

AI image tools change fast, and their t-shirt results change with them. When a new version shifts the picture, we revise this post.

Each of these tools also wants its prompt written in its own way. Our T-Shirt Design Prompt Helper suggests quote and artwork ideas for your niche, then writes the final prompt in the wording your chosen tool understands best. You can find it here.

1. ChatGPT Image 2

ChatGPT is our winner for t-shirt designs today. No other tool in this test handles fonts as well, or works the text into the artwork as naturally. That part matters a lot, and as you'll see further down, not every tool can do it.

The art style itself has a true t-shirt feel too. Our guess is that ChatGPT's training data holds a large number of t-shirt designs, and it shows in how well it performs here.

One more thing we love is the slightly distressed touch it adds to some designs. It gives them a gentle vintage look, which suits a shirt perfectly.

2. Grok Imagine 2

Grok is not far behind ChatGPT, and some of you may even like it more. It also seems to have plenty of t-shirt designs in its training data, and aesthetically it's very strong.

The main difference from ChatGPT is the look: Grok's designs are more vector-like. The fonts are well chosen and sit right where they belong.

Grok is also well known for turning images into videos. That can serve you well when it's time to promote your designs, and it comes at no extra charge for Grok users.

3. Gemini 3.6 Flash / 3.1 Pro

With Gemini, the first issues start to show. Some designs are not readable enough, and the fonts are often too simple.

Still, its results look like proper t-shirt designs. With good prompting and a bit of patience, Gemini can definitely earn a place in your workflow.

Here we have to draw a thick line.

The five tools below did not show enough t-shirt design capability in our testing, so we don't recommend them for this niche. We still share what we found, along with the best designs we got from each, so you can see where every tool stands.

4. Flux.2 Pro

A couple of years ago, Flux was a decent choice for t-shirts. Back then, correct spelling and vector-like graphics were enough. The bar has moved since. Now its fonts often fall apart, spelling mistakes creep in, and readability is not good enough. And of course, Flux's old favorite, the lack of contrast, found its way in here as well.

Below is the best of what Flux gave us. Most of these still fall short of a shirt-ready design, so take them as a picture of where the tool stands today:

5. Ideogram 4.0

Ideogram was also good at t-shirt designs some time ago, but times have changed. To us, its designs now look outdated. Not bad, just outdated. Some are also too simple and lack detail, and the good old AI trouble with limbs still shows up.

Here is our selection from the test. As a whole, the set still isn't t-shirt material, though it gives a fair idea of Ideogram's style:

6. Midjourney 8 / 8.1 / 8.2

Version 8 was a big step forward for Midjourney on spelling. Even so, it is still the weakest of the group in that area. It's also hard to get actual t-shirt designs out of it. Ordinary clipart is no problem at all, but as we already agreed clipart is not a t-shirt design. On top of that, we saw text that was too small and some strange compositions.

These are the closest Midjourney got to a t-shirt design. Most of them still read as clipart rather than something you'd print on a shirt:

7. Recraft V4

Recraft does rather well on spelling. The fonts, though, are often too small or overcomplicated, which makes them harder to read. Its art style also doesn't quite match current t-shirt trends, so the results look more like clipart with text than like t-shirt designs.

All in all, we'd say Recraft's strong side is full-canvas compositions, not isolated elements. This gallery collects its best t-shirt attempts:

8. Seedream 4.5

Seedream's main issue is fonts. Too simple, too straight, too thin - it collected every font sin you can imagine! Beyond that, the compositions and the art style don't suit t-shirts either. It was also the only tool that often made designs as full illustrations rather than isolated elements, which means the artwork can end up cropped.

Conclusion

We have now published six comparisons in our What AI to Pick series, and this is the first time we can recommend only three tools for the niche. T-shirt design turned out to be a demanding area, and it shows quite clearly where AI image tools stand today. Here they are far from interchangeable: ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini can make real t-shirt designs, while the other five still have catching up to do on the basics. The table sums up everything above.
